We took the kids fishing for the first time this season and had a nice time. That is not to say that we actually caught any fish. If English were a perfect language, we would have two verbs at play in this little blog. The first, let's call "fishing" would include the process of actually retrieving fish from the water. We need another verb for aimlessly tossing our lines into the water with no actual result. But, understanding that English is not the pure "Adamic" language, we'll have to be satisfied with describing our labors as "fishing."
The kids had a fairly good time, though Christopher quickly tired of our lack of success. I think he simply needs more experience in the relaxing, contemplative nature of fishing. Jared had a wonderful time, and was an enthusiastic participant. So enthusiastic that he even hurled his own pole into the lake on a particularly forceful cast. Fortunately, his pole floats and I was able to reach it and "fish" it out. So, we at least got something of value from the water.
If we were spending our time "fishing" then Matthew and Becky spent their time "ducking". He along with Becky, stayed at the nearby playground and chased ducks back and forth. Matthew's goal, to get a duck. Becky's goal, to keep Matthew out of the pond.
